Derivation of the Verlinde Formula from Chern-Simons Theory and the G/G Model

چکیده
We give a derivation of the Verlinde formula for the Gk WZW model from Chern-Simons theory, without taking recourse to CFT, by calculating explicitly the partition function ZΣ×S1 of Σ × S 1 with an arbitrary number of labelled punctures. By a suitable gauge choice, ZΣ×S1 is reduced to the partition function of an Abelian topological field theory on Σ (a deformation of non-Abelian BF and Yang-Mills theory) whose evaluation is straightforward. This relates the Verlinde formula to the Ray-Singer torsion of Σ× S1. We derive the Gk/Gk model from Chern-Simons theory, proving their equivalence, and give an alternative derivation of the Verlinde formula by calculating the Gk/Gk path integral via a functional version of the Weyl integral formula. From this point of view the Verlinde formula arises from the corresponding Jacobian, the Weyl determinant. Also, a novel derivation of the shift k → k+h is given, based on the index of the twisted Dolbeault complex. e-mail: [email protected] e-mail: [email protected]

Equivariant Verlinde formula from fivebranes and vortices
We study complex Chern-Simons theory on a Seifert manifold M3 by embedding it into string theory. We show that complex Chern-Simons theory on M3 is equivalent to a topologically twisted supersymmetric theory and its partition function can be naturally regularized by turning on a mass parameter. We find that the dimensional reduction of this theory to 2d gives the low energy dynamics of vortices...
متن کاملThe Chern Classes of the Verlinde Bundles
A formula for the first Chern class of the Verlinde bundle over the moduli space of smooth genus g curves is given. A finite-dimensional argument is presented in rank 2 using geometric symmetries obtained from strange duality, relative Serre duality, and Wirtinger duality together with the projective flatness of the Hitchin connection. A derivation using conformal-block methods is presented in ...
متن کاملTwo Aspects of K Ahler Geometry in the G=g Model
The subject of this talk is the role of equivariant KK ahler geometry in the G=G model or, in other words, that of its equivariant supersymmetry. This supersym-metry is somewhat unusual in that it does not model the innnitesimal action of the group of gauge transformations. Nevertheless, this supersymmetry is useful on, at least, two counts. Firstly, it allows one to localise the path integral....
متن کامل2 00 1 Chern - Simons action in noncommutative space
We derive the noncommutative Chern-Simons action induced by Dirac fermions coupled to a background gauge field, for the fundamental , antifundamental, and the adjoint representation. We discuss properties of the noncommutative Chern-Simons action showing in particular that the Seiberg-Witten formula maps it into the standard commutative Chern-Simons action. Recent results in noncommutative geom...
